It’s baaaaack…

Last year you dazzled us with short films that showcased your ingenuity, ability to entertain, and most of all…your love for City of Heroes. We put a call out for budding Spielbergs and Raimis…and in return, we got a D’Anna and a Shapiro! Who will be next?

Introducing the 2nd Annual Paragon City Film Festival! This year it’s bigger and better, and we challenge you to demonstrate your cinematic skills by creating a City of Heroes short film to be judged in the following 5 categories: Best Action, Best Comedy, Best Animated, Best Live Action and Best Overall.

Using game footage, your animation skills, a video camera or any other method you can dream up, create a CoH movie for our viewing pleasure. The subject matter is completely up to you – just make sure it’s about the game. This is your chance to be front-and-center as a Director…exhibit your editing skills, create your own exciting story, add captions, music, voiceovers—be creative, for the sky is the limit (just make VERY sure nothing in your film infringes any patent, copyright, trademark or other intellectual property right, or any privacy, publicity or publishing rights of any third party, or is libelous, obscene or otherwise contrary to law!).

All submissions will be judged equally on the following criteria: originality, creativity, presentation and visual portrayal.

Your film entry can be no longer than 3 minutes in length. It must be submitted in Quicktime, AVI, or MPEG 640x480 format and codec suggestions are mpeg 4 or soreson 3. We prefer Quicktime format. Audio should be 16-bit stereo sound, 22khz. You may either host the film yourself and submit a url where we can download it (make SURE it’s up and running for us to view – we’ll only visit twice and if the film isn’t available for viewing, your entry will be disqualified), or burn the movie to a CD and mail it to our office (please see the Official Rules for specifics).

Only ONE short film entry only per person and email address will be accepted (you can designate what categories you want to be judged in, but please note that judges retain the right to consider you for ALL 5).

No entries from last year’s contest may be re-submitted this year. Films must be in final, polished condition when submitted for this contest. Any changing or updating of films online or sending of new versions after your initial version has been received will result in disqualification! All participants must be current City of Heroes subscribers.

You have approximately 6 1/2 weeks to create your masterpiece, so get crackin’! The contest begins on Wednesday, June 29, at 4pm (CDT) and ends at 11:59pm (CDT) on Sunday, August 14, with winners being announced no later than Friday, August 26th.

If you’re planning on utilizing game footage in your movie and would like basic instructions, here is information on how to demo record.

Due to copyright music laws, if you’re going to “score” your cinematic masterpiece, you MUST do so with the musical pieces located here: ftp.coh.com/music/.

(Internet Explorer users behind firewalls - if you are having difficulties accessing the FTP site, please make sure that the “Use Passive FTP” option under the tools, internet options, advanced section, is checked).

Feel free to combine music selections and/or splice them if you wish, but you may NOT add your own or use music created by someone else. For this same reason, you may record your own voiceover but copyrighted sound bytes from television programs, movies, etc. are strictly prohibited. Film entries that violate intellectual property laws will be automatically disqualified from the contest!
